Last week we fed 420 people a belly-busting meal of fish, chips, salads, and desert. How much garbage do you think we produced from the fish fry?

Led by ND Board of Trade member Alice Scott, our annual fish fry was on a mission to reduce waste to virtually nothing. We used biodegradable or reusable cloths for cleanup. Containers were recycled, as were cups for the cold drinks. Garbage cans were removed from the public area so that all plates and settings were brought back to the kitchen for sorting by board of trade members. All dishes and cutlery were sorted, all food scraps and paper napkings/placemats were also sorted and either composted or recycled. Alice led a virtual assembly line from trays of dirty dishes, through sorting, through to the dishwasher.

The small amount of garbage remaining was created mostly during the preparation and setup for the fish fry. We’ll be reviewing this to see if we can eliminate garbage completely for our next event.

This Wednesday’s Fish Fry Dinner was a smashing success! Numbers aren’t confirmed yet, but an estimated 420 people came out to enjoy an excellent meal, served up by the Board of Trade and the Village Caterer. The weather was great, and the picnic tables were as full as the dining room.

On September 10th, Jeff Hauck of New Dundee had a tragic riding accident. He suffered severe spinal trauma resulting in no feeling from the waist down. A GoFundMe page has been set up so that area residents are able to assist. You can find the GoFundMe page here.

Members of the ND Board of Trade recently visited the Willibald Distillery located just outside Ayr Ontario.

This new distillery currently focus on their own blend of Gin, however they expect to have whiskey available in about 3 years (Canadian whiskey must be aged 3 years). 

Members saw the entire distilliation process including:

• starting with a mash of local grains (they expect to eventually grow their own grains on the home farm) they add yeast to convert the sugar in the grain to alcohol.
• The first distillation produces whiskey which is aged in oak casks for at least 3 years.
• The second distillation produces tasteless, odourless vodka.
• The third distillation produces gin. During this stage juniper berries and other spices are added to the vodka prior to the third distillation.  During the actual distillation the steam produced is passed through additional spices for further flavouring. 
• Willibald then ages their gin for 6 months, producing a gin with a distinct amber colour.

17 local artists are participating in the new Hamburg Studio Tour on Saturday 23 September from 10am to 5pm.  Locations are scattered throughout New Hamburg and prizes are available for those visiting at least 6 locations.

The annual New Dundee fish fry will be Wednesday September 20th this year, running from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  Location as always is the Community Center. Come out and have fish and chips for dinner and socialize with your neighbours and friends.

Price is $20 at the door or $18 if you preregister (see any Board of Trade member to purchase tickets early).  Your $20 includes all taxes and gratuities as well as:

• 2 piece Cod fish and chip dinner
• salads
• cold drinks
• coffee and tea
• dessert

We had a lot of fun this Saturday at the Garden Party, despite the stormy weather; when the rain started we were all safely inside enjoying our cake and ice cream. At least the rain held off until after a rather energetic croquet tournament. The turn-out was good, and it was nice to see all the red and white hats, and snazzy Canada Day outfits. Thanks to the volunteers and especially the Women’s Institute for the fantastic cake!
